SEA LIONS NEARLY PULL OFF COMEBACK AGAINST TOROS

(CARSON, Calif.) PLNU Women's Basketball nearly overcame a 14-point first half deficit at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday night, with the Toros only escaping with a 74-71 victory because of a last-second basket.

"We battled like crazy tonight," Head Coach Charity Elliott said. "We were few in number but would not back down. We always want to come away with the win, but I couldn't be prouder of our team."

With CSUDH up 14 in the second quarter, PLNU ended the first half on an 8-0 run to get back to within six.

Point Loma managed to take its first lead since early in the opening quarter thanks to a Tavia Rowell 3-pointer with 1:53 to play in the third.

Another triple from Rowell then helped the Sea Lions take a 49-48 advantage into the fourth.

The teams battled in the final period before Kaylee Byon's jumper put PLNU back up by a pair with 49 seconds remaining.

Then with the Sea Lions leading by one, the Toros corralled an offensive rebound and got the follow-up to go with just three seconds on the clock to score what proved to be the winning basket.

Rowell scored a PLNU career-high 29 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including 5-for-8 from downtown. Alli McDonald posted a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Byon filled the stat sheet with her 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Point Loma (1-2 overall) plays its home opener on Friday against Alaska Anchorage at 1:30 p.m. in Golden Gym.
