BYON DELIVERS IN THE CLUTCH AS PLNU WINS HOME OPENER

(SAN DIEGO) Kaylee Byon delivered when it mattered most.

With Point Loma trailing Alaska Anchorage by one with 11.9 seconds to play, Byon collected Maddie Mersch's inbounds pass and drove through the lane before finishing with a left-handed lay-in to lift the Sea Lions to a 66-64 victory in their home opener on Friday afternoon.

Byon (5 points), making her Golden Gym debut wearing green and gold, scored in double figures in each of Point Loma's first three games of the season but was held without a field goal against Anchorage until delivering her first of many signature Sea Lions moments.

Alli McDonald recorded her second straight double-double and third consecutive game with double-digit rebounds, as she led all players with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

McDonald, who went 10-for-11 from the free throw line, started and capped off a 10-0 PLNU run in the first quarter that turned a 2-9 deficit into a 12-9 advantage.

After the Seawolves went back up by as many as nine early in the second quarter, two more McDonald free throws tied the game in the final minute of the half before the visitors made a last second 3-pointer to go into the locker room ahead.

PLNU then put together its best offensive quarter of the game in the third, scoring 23 points. Grace Moyers scored all 11 of her points in the third, making a trio of triples and going on a personal 5-0 run to give the Sea Lions a 56-51 lead entering the fourth.

Anchorage battled back to take a one-point advantage before the teams traded leads down the stretch, until Byon's heroics and a PLNU defensive stop at the other end clinched the victory.

Point Loma (2-2 overall) returns to Golden Gym on Thursday to take on Regis at 7:15 p.m.
