(SAN RAFAEL, Calif.) PLNU Women's Basketball led by as many as 29 points on its way to a 77-64 road victory over Dominican to open up PacWest play on Thursday night.
Â
"We played several quarters of really good basketball tonight," Head Coach
Charity Elliott said. "I'm really proud of how this team is competing and staying focused on their roles."
Â
Point Loma never trailed in the game and dominated from the opening tip, with
Kaylee Byon's personal 4-0 run to start the first quarter getting the Sea Lions off to a good start.
Â
Byon then assisted on
Eiley Tippins' layup that put the visitors up by double digits late in the opening quarter.
Â
PLNU held DUC to single digits in the second, as Point Loma extended its lead to 17 at the half after shooting 64% from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Â
Tavia Rowell scored all seven of her points in the third, as the Sea Lions scored 25 points in the quarter. Rowell closed the period with a fastbreak layup to put PLNU up by a game-high 29.
Â
Point Loma maintained that advantage four minutes into the final stanza after
Hannah Golan's basket off an offensive rebound, before PLNU closed out a double-digit victory to begin its conference schedule.
Â
Â
Byon led all scorers with 17 points and was joined by three other Sea Lions in double figures –
Alli McDonald (13 points), Tippins (12 points), Golan (11 points).
Â
"Kaylee got off to a hot start tonight and we had some huge contributions from multiple players," Elliott said. "Eiley and Mac continue to lead so well and I thought Hannah was huge off the bench for us."
Â
Point Loma (6-3 overall, 1-0 PacWest) takes its four-game winning streak to San Francisco on Saturday for a road game at Academy of Art. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
"It's a long season and we have to stay focused on one game at a time," Elliott said.
