SEA LIONS CLINCH SPOT IN PACWEST TOURNAMENT

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Basketball had a lot to celebrate Wednesday on Senior Night.

Senior guard Ellie Turk joined the 1,000 Point Club with two late free throws that put the finishing touches on a 70-65 Point Loma win over Westmont, which clinched the Sea Lions a spot in the PacWest Tournament.

Tavia Rowell, who joined the 1,000 Point Club herself in Saturday's win over Hawai'i Pacific, scored a PLNU career-high 25 points while Eiley Tippins recorded her third-straight double-double with 13 points and a personal-best 17 rebounds.

A Rowell 3-pointer capped off an 8-0 Sea Lions run in the second quarter which helped Point Loma stay within one at the half.

Shayla O'Neil, whose 11 points made it three Sea Lions in double figures, then scored the first-five points of another 8-0 PLNU stretch early in the third quarter to help Point Loma regain its lead.

Fueled by Tippins, Point Loma dominated in the low post in the second half, outrebounding the Warriors by eight and outscoring them in the paint by that same margin after halftime.

PLNU led by as many as nine before Westmont made it a one-possession game late, but the Sea Lions kept their nerve at the free throw line down the stretch, making 11-of-12 from the charity stripe for the game.

Point Loma (16-10 overall, 12-6 PacWest), winners of three-straight, finishes the regular season in the Bay Area with games at Dominican (Feb. 29) and Academy of Art (March 2) before hosting the PacWest Tournament in Golden Gym, March 7-9.

PLNU entered Wednesday tied with Dominican for third place in the PacWest standings, 1.5 games behind second-placed Fresno Pacific. Next Thursday's matchup with DUC will likely decide the third seed in the PacWest Tournament.
