SEA LIONS AND SUNBIRDS SPLIT TO OPEN PACWEST PLAY

(FRESNO, Calif.) A six-run fourth inning in game two helped No. 6 PLNU Baseball earn a split with Fresno Pacific on the first day of the PacWest season on Friday.

After FPU won the first game 13-3 in eight innings, Point Loma responded in game two with an 8-5 victory.

The Sunbirds scored four runs in the bottom of the third of game two to take a 4-0 lead, only for the Sea Lions to immediately answer back with six runs of their own in the top of the fourth.

Jake Entrekin's double to left center cut PLNU's deficit in half before Bryson Hashimoto's RBI-single up the middle brought Point Loma to within one.

The Sea Lions then scored on an error before Will Pope's sacrifice bunt gave PLNU the lead. Esai Santos' single through the right side capped off the inning to put the Sea Lions up by two.

After FPU got one back in the bottom of the fifth, Scott Anderson came through with a two-RBI single to extend PLNU's lead to three.

James Sashin then closed out the game with two scoreless innings, striking out three.

That win came after Fresno Pacific's offense put up 13 runs in game one to end Point Loma's six-game winning streak. That included three runs in the third, five in the fourth and four more in the bottom of the eighth to win via mercy rule.

PLNU scored all three of its runs in the top of the fifth, two of which came off a Hashimoto home run and the other from an Eric Smelko RBI-single.

Point Loma (9-3 overall) and Fresno Pacific (5-3) conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
