(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Tennis set a new NCAA-era program record winning streak with its ninth-straight victory, a 5-2 triumph over Bowdoin on Monday.
Point Loma improved to 10-2 on the season, its best start to a campaign since 2011, when the Sea Lions opened the year with a program-record 11-consecutive wins.
PLNU claimed the doubles point against Bowdoin, winning all three doubles matches.
At No. 3,
Emely Valencia and
Anna Pallencaoe were leading 3-1 before getting back-to-back breaks and winning the first doubles match to be completed, 6-2.
Amanda Letzring and
Quin Brady trailed 1-3 at No. 2 but won three-straight games to take the lead.
They then led 5-4, just like
Arianna Audelo and
Thelma Sepulveda at No. 1, with both Sea Lions pairings serving for the match at the same time.
Sepulveda's serve was then returned into the net to clinch the doubles point for Point Loma, with Letzring and Brady also winning 6-4 soon thereafter.
Then in singles, PacWest Player of the Week Brady rolled to a 5-0 lead in set one before claiming a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 to reach double-digit singles wins on the season.
Letzring trailed 2-3 in set one of her No. 1 singles match before breaking her opponent's serve to tie it up. She then charged the net to hit a volley winner that put her ahead, before breaking serve again to go ahead 5-3. The senior went on to win 6-4, 6-2.
Audelo (6-2, 1-6, 6-2) and Valencia (1-6, 6-4, 7-5) then both won in three sets at No. 2 and 6 respectively, with Valencia overcoming a first-set defeat to win the final two sets.
Point Loma now hits the road for two matches, both to be played at Fresno Pacific.
PLNU will face off with FPU on Friday at noon before taking on Academy of Art on Saturday at 9 a.m.
