(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Soccer scored twice in the first five-plus minutes against Vanguard on Saturday on its way to a 4-1 PacWest victory that keeps the Sea Lions unbeaten in conference play.
Grace Nelson drew a penalty kick just 34 seconds into the game when her goal-bound shot was blocked by an opponent's hand, before stepping up to do the honors and confidently giving the Sea Lions an early lead.
Kylie Garcia then doubled that advantage less than five minutes later with a spectacular inside-of-the-foot volley from 10 yards out.
Jenna Bisset threw the ball in from the right sideline to
Alyssa Ketcham, who laid it back off to Bisset to cross it first time to Garcia to do the rest with her right foot.
Vanguard got one back soon after in the eighth minute, but PLNU went back up by two through Garcia again in the 42nd minute.
Lily Larez had a shot blocked but only as far as
Priya Torres, who headed the ball back to Larez to send a left-footed cross into the box.
Maddy Saruwatari then cleverly shielded a Vanguard defender to let the ball run all the way to an onrushing Garcia, who made no mistake with her first-time, right-footed finish.
Larez assisted on PLNU's fourth goal as well, coming courtesy of
Alyssa Ketcham. Larez won a tackle and the ball rolled across the top of the box for Ketcham to curl a left-footed shot up and over a diving goalkeeper in fantastic fashion.
Point Loma (5-2-3 overall, 2-0-2 PacWest) next travels to Hawai'i for two games, beginning on Thursday at Hawai'i Hilo.
Kickoff in Hilo is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. HT / 3:30 p.m. PT.
