UNBEATEN SUNBIRDS SPOIL SEA LIONS' STREAK

(FRESNO, Calif.) Unbeaten Fresno Pacific spoiled a perfect road trip for No. 5 PLNU Volleyball, as the Sunbirds upset the Sea Lions in four sets (25-13, 25-14, 14-25, 25-21) on Monday night, ending Point Loma's 11-match winning streak.

PLNU, winners against Dominican and Menlo on Friday and Saturday, hoped to make it 3-for-3 on its trip up north.

But FPU (13-0 overall), receiving votes in the national rankings, had other ideas in jumping out to an early 2-0 match lead with victories in sets one and two.

Point Loma fought back with a dominant third stanza to prolong the match, hitting .341 in the third set while holding Fresno Pacific to just a .029 attack %.

The Sea Lions then jumped out to a 7-0 lead in set four and led as last as 20-19, only for the hosts to score six of the final seven points to steal the match in four.

Abigail Nua led all players with 18 kills, while Jill Leslie added 15 of her own. Sophia Baugh had 42 assists, while Macy Reynolds (14 digs), Kira Federico (12 digs) and Nua (10 digs) all recorded double-digit digs. Kate Sullivan had a match-high four total blocks.

FPU's victory came one day shy of the three-year anniversary of its last win over PLNU in 2022, with Point Loma winning four straight going in and 11 of the last 12 between the two sides.

In Monday's AVCA Coaches Poll, Fresno Pacific received the second most votes of any team not in the Top-25. With a four-set victory over the Sea Lions, the Sunbirds will now surely jump into the national rankings when next week's poll is released.

Fortunately for PLNU, the match was a non-conference contest, and the two teams will play again on Nov. 15 in the final matchup of the PacWest regular season for both teams.

Point Loma (13-2 overall) will resume conference play on Saturday, as PLNU returns home to host Westmont at 2 p.m. in Golden Gym.
