(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.)
Grace Nelson scored a free kick in the second half to lift PLNU Women's Soccer to a crucial road win at Westmont in PacWest play on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, Nelson stepped up to take a free kick from outside the left side of the box following a foul against
Priya Torres.
Nelson then lofted her shot over the goalkeeper and inside the side netting at the far post to score what proved to be the eventual game-winner.
Her fourth goal of the season ties her for the team lead with
Kylie Garcia and
Nikki Ross.
Point Loma had 19 total shots (14 in the second half) compared to Westmont's six, as PLNU held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The Sea Lions earned seven corner kicks without conceding one, and were dangerous with them as
Zoe Crockett and
Maddy Saruwatari both forced saves off corners.
Ross,
Andrea Lozano,
Maddie Khan, Garcia and
Emma Majors also put shots on target, as the Warriors somehow only allowed the one goal.
Center back
Zoe Crockett made a couple crucial defensive interventions late, while goalkeeper
Julia Pinnell made four saves in goal to preserve the shutout, the team's seventh of the season.
Point Loma (7-3-4 overall, 4-1-3 PacWest) returns home to host Jessup on Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
