(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Basketball defeated previously unbeaten Dominican on Saturday, 76-71, in a rematch of last season's PacWest Tournament championship.
Â
Dominican entered a perfect 6-0 on the season, but Point Loma shot 62.1% in the second half to hand the Penguins their first loss of the year.
Â
After
Maddie Mersch beat the first half buzzer with a layup to give PLNU a one-point lead going into the locker room, the Sea Lions made all seven of their shots from inside the 3-point line in the third quarter.
Â
Point Loma then extended its lead to as many as 14 in the fourth after an
Izzy Navarro triple.
Â
PLNU still led by double digits with under two minutes remaining in regulation, as Point Loma extended its winning streak to eight games and its perfect start to PacWest play to 4-0.
Â
Navarro led all players with 19 points and nine assists to go along with seven rebounds.
Eiley Tippins scored 13 points, while
Hannah Golan nearly recorded a double-double of 10 points and nine rebounds.
Â
The Sea Lions' bench outscored that of the Penguins, 25-13, thanks in large part to
Maddie Mersch's 10 points and
Emma Sales' eight points.
Â
Point Loma (8-2 overall, 4-0 PacWest) returns to conference action on Saturday at Azusa Pacific at 2 p.m.
