(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Basketball, receiving votes in the latest WBCA Coaches Poll, set a new program record for most points in a single quarter (36) on its way to a 90-67 rout of Menlo that clinched the outright PacWest championship for Point Loma.
Â
The Sea Lions set the new program mark in the third quarter, shooting 12-for-13 from the field (92.3%) and 11-for-12 (91.7%) from the free throw line in the period, which is PLNU's best offensive quarter since women's college basketball switched from halves to quarters in 2015-16.
Â
That came after PLNU led 34-27 at the half, thanks in part to a 12-0 run to end the first quarter as part of a 16-0 stretch for the Sea Lions that carried over into the second quarter.
Â
PLNU then scored 20 more points in the fourth to record its second-best offensive scoring output of the season after its season-opening, 92-74 win against Cal State San Marcos on Nov. 8.
Â
Â
Tavia Rowell (17 points) led four Sea Lions in double figures, followed by
Eiley Tippins (16 points),
Maddie Mersch (12 points) and
Shayla O'Neil (10 points).
Â
Tippins was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, while Mersch and O'Neil each went 4-for-5.
Kaylee Byon dished out a game-high nine assists.
Â
In total, 10 different Sea Lions scored, as PLNU outscored Menlo 37-16 in bench points and dominated in the low post, nearly doubling the Oaks in points in the paint (50-26).
Â
Point Loma (22-5 overall, 17-2 PacWest) previously clinched at least a share of the conference title, but Thursday's win ensures the Sea Lions are the outright PacWest champions for the first time.
Â
PLNU, winners of eight in-a-row, closes out its regular season on Saturday at home against Westmont. Tip-off inside Golden Gym is scheduled for 2 p.m., with a Senior Day ceremony set to take place before the game.
