SEA LIONS TAKE DOWN HIGHLY-RANKED SAGEHENS

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Tennis was announced as the No. 15 team in the ITA national rankings on Wednesday, earning its highest ranking in the program's NCAA era.

On Thursday, the Sea Lions backed that up in a major way.

Point Loma took down Pomona-Pitzer, 4-1, to defeat the No. 4 ranked team in NCAA Division III.

The Sagehens won the doubles point, only for the Sea Lions to respond by winning all four singles matches to finish. PLNU was also leading in the other two matches left unfinished.

Arianna Audelo got the Sea Lions on the board with her singles win at No. 1, taking a close first set 7-5 before not dropping a game in the second set, 6-0.

Antonia Barth also won in straight sets at No. 3 (6-1, 6-3), before Quin Brady finished off her 6-0, 7-6 victory at No. 4 by winning a second set tiebreak after sweeping the first set.

Anna Pallencaoe then clinched the team victory, winning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 6, holding serve to win the match.

Alina Kupfer lost her first set before winning 10 of the next 13 games in sets two and three, leading 3-6, 6-2, 4-1 with her match left unfinished.

Emely Valencia swept her first set 6-0 and was leading 2-1 in the third when PLNU clinched the match.

Point Loma (10-2 overall) equals last season's squad by reaching 10 wins in just 12 matches.

The Sea lions, winners of eight straight matches, return to the PLNU Tennis Courts on Saturday to play Metro State at 1 p.m.
