(SURPRISE, Ariz.)
Alexander Leischner made more history on Thursday, becoming the all-time leader in career singles victories at the PacWest Men's Tennis Championships.
His ninth career singles victory at the conference tournament, more than any other player in PacWest history, put the finishing touches on No. 3 seed Point Loma's 4-0 victory over No. 6 seed Metro State.
Leischner partnered with
Elias Weeks to win their No. 1 doubles match, 7-5. Trailing 4-5, the duo broke MSU Denver's serve before Leischner's overhead smash at the net put PLNU up 6-5. Then with the next game tied 30-30, Point Loma claimed the final two points, with Leischner's backhand winner sealing the victory.
Andrew Suver and
David Fisinger then clinched the doubles point for the Sea Lions with a break of serve to win 6-4 at No. 2.
Weeks got PLNU going in singles with his 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 6, winning the final three games in the second set and clinching the match after his powerful serve was returned long out of bounds.
Niclas Goltz then put the Roadrunners on the brink with his 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 2.
That set the stage for Leischner to make history, with the Sea Lions' No. 1 singles player overcoming a 3-6 first set loss to win the next two sets by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
Suver (No. 3) battled back from dropping the opening set and trailing 2-5 in the second to force a tiebreak, winning the final three points of the tiebreak to extend the match to a third set. He then led 2-0 in the third stanza before Leischner clinched the team victory.
Point Loma (12-5 overall) advances to Friday's semifinals against second-seeded Concordia. Doubles play will begin at 1 p.m. in Surprise.
