SEA LIONS REACH PACWEST SEMIS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

(SURPRISE, Ariz.) No. 2 seed PLNU Women's Tennis opened up the PacWest Championships with a 4-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 7 seed Colorado Mesa, advancing to the semifinals for the third straight year.

Point Loma won the doubles point, with Anna Pallencaoe and Emely Valencia cruising to a 6-0 victory at No. 3 before Arianna Audelo and Quin Brady were victorious at No. 1, 6-3.

Strong serving from Pallencaoe put her and Valencia up immediately, 1-0. After they broke CMU's serve, the duo won all four points in the third game, with an ace from Valencia putting them up 3-0.

PLNU's No. 3 pairing then won the next three games to set the stage for Audelo and Brady to clinch the doubles point after they stormed back to win the final four games of their set at No. 1.

Trailing 2-3, Brady's forehand winner down the line tied the match before her overhand smash at the net gave PLNU's top duo a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Valencia (6-3, 6-1) and Pallencaoe (6-1, 6-0) continued their dominant form into singles, winning on Courts No. 5 and 6 respectively to put the Mavericks on the brink.

Audelo then clinched the match for the Sea Lions, overcoming a 2-3 first set deficit to win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2.

Alina Kupfer (No. 1 – 6-4, 3-2), Antonia Barth (No. 3 – 6-1, 2-1) and Brady (No. 4 – 6-3, 4-2) were all leading their respective singles matches when PLNU clinched the overall team victory.

Point Loma (16-4 overall) now advances to Friday's semifinals to play sixth-seeded Hawai'i Pacific, who beat third-seeded Concordia 4-1.

Doubles play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
