(SAN DIEGO) No. 13 PLNU Baseball showed little rust after more than a week off, sweeping Concordia in Tuesday's PacWest doubleheader by scores of 7-4 and 7-2.
Point Loma hit five home runs on the day, including a pair from
Luke Reece, who accounted for all seven of Point Loma's runs in game one.
His three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth gave the Sea Lions a 3-2 lead. Then after CUI tied it up the following inning, Reece launched a grand slam in the bottom half to put the hosts up for good.
Reece's seven RBIs in game one are one shy of the program's single-game record of eight.
The long ball then carried over into game two, with
Jake Entrekin and
Noah Meffert both homering in the first inning to put PLNU up 4-0.
The Sea Lions then scored a single run in each of the next three innings on Reece's RBI-single,
Jake Schwartz's first career collegiate home run and
Owen May's sacrifice fly.
That was more than enough run support for starting pitcher
Brock Mayer, who pitched five strong innings of two-run ball to earn his sixth win of the season.
Jonathan Kozasky earned his fifth victory of the year in game one with five strong innings of his own.
PLNU's bullpen of
Jack Bunnell,
Michael Sarhatt and
Bobby Brown combined to pitch six innings without allowing an earned run.
Tuesday's doubleheader made up two games that were originally scheduled for March 14 but were postponed because of rain.
In between games, CUI Head Coach Joe Turgeon presented the Hamilton family a custom bat and jersey in honor of PLNU's beloved Athletic Director Ethan Hamilton, who tragically passed away this past summer after a short illness.
Point Loma (24-10 overall) now travels to Hawai'i for eight games in Honolulu, beginning on Saturday against Hawai'i Pacific. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT / 2 p.m. HT.
