(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Tennis is Florida bound.
Â
No. 2 seed Point Loma defeated No. 3 seed Hawai'i Pacific, 4-3, in the NCAA West Regional on Monday afternoon to advance to the NCAA Finals for the first time in program history.
Â
Making its fourth straight regional appearance, PLNU picked up its first ever regional victory and did so in dramatic fashion, coming back from a 1-3 deficit to punch its ticket to the NCAA Finals as one of 16 teams who will compete for the national championship.
Â
Pushed to the brink, the Sea Lions won the final three singles matches to finish, with
Arianna Audelo's three-set triumph on Court No. 2 sealing the historic victory.
Â
Â
HPU took an early lead in the match by claiming the doubles point, despite
Emely Valencia's and
Anna Pallencaoe's 6-3 win at No. 3 with back-to-back breaks helping the PLNU duo take the final four games of their set.
Â
Audelo and
Quin Brady (No. 1), as well as
Alina Kupfer and
Antonia Barth (No. 2), nearly pulled off impressive comebacks on their respective courts, signaling a sign of things to come.
Â
PLNU's No. 1 duo trailed 1-4 before making it 3-4. Trailing 0-40 in that game, the Sea Lions forced a deuce point on strong serving from Audelo before the Sharks held on to win.
Â
Kupfer and Barth were behind 0-5 but stormed back to make it 4-5 with a break of serve, only for HPU to win the next game and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Â
While the Sea Lions were unable to complete a comeback in doubles, their resiliency paid off in singles.
Â
Anna Pallencaoe dominated on Court No. 6 to get the hosts on the board with her 6-4, 6-1 win.
Â
HPU won at No. 5 and No. 3 to come to within one point of clinching the match, but PLNU had other ideas.
Â
Â
Brady rolled in her first set at No. 4, 6-1, before winning her third set by that same margin after bouncing back from a second-set loss.
Â
Kupfer then leveled the match with her 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) singles victory at No. 1. A break of serve in the first set at 2-2 helped Kupfer overcome an early deficit in the opening stanza, before she won a second-set tiebreak.
Â
Kupfer's big serve followed by a forehand winner set up double match point in the tiebreak, which she converted to put all eyes on Court No. 2 to determine the outcome of the match.
Â
After dropping the first set 4-6, Audelo stormed back to take the second set 6-3 and force a deciding third stanza, which she opened with a break of serve.
Â
Then with the final set tied at 4-4, Audelo broke serve again to go up 5-4. With the next game tied 30-30, the senior held serve by winning the final two points to clinch history for the Sea Lions.
Â
Â
Point Loma (19-4 overall) ties its 2022 team for most wins in the program's NCAA era.
Â
PLNU will now compete at the NCAA Finals in Altamonte Springs, Florida, with the tournament taking place May 21-25.
