(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) The year of firsts continues for PLNU Women's Tennis.
Â
In its first ever NCAA Championships appearance, No. 8 seed Point Loma defeated No. 9 seed Augustana 4-1 on Wednesday morning for its first win at the national championships in program history.
Â
That comes after the Sea Lions won the PacWest Conference title and were victorious in the NCAA West Regional for the very first time.
Â
Â
PLNU won the doubles point with victories on Courts No. 3 and No. 1, beginning with
Emely Valencia's and
Anna Pallencaoe's 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Â
Arianna Audelo and
Quin Brady then clinched the doubles point with their 7-5 victory at No. 1.
With the set tied at 5-5, the ninth-ranked doubles pairing in the nation broke Augustana's serve before holding its own serve to put PLNU up 1-0 in the match.
Â
Pallencaoe (No. 6), Brady (No. 4) and Audelo (No. 2) then carried that doubles momentum into singles, winning their individual matches to clinch Point Loma's first ever win at the NCAA Championships.
Â
Â
Augustana briefly tied the match at 1-1 before Pallencaoe put the Sea Lions back in front with her straight-set victory at No. 6, winning 6-3, 6-3.
Â
Brady also won in straight sets at No. 4 with her 6-3, 7-5 victory. Leading 4-3 in the first set, she won the final two games to take the opening stanza. She then overcame an early 1-2 deficit in the second set to get PLNU to within one singles victory of clinching the match.
Â
Â
Audelo, just as she did in the NCAA West Regional against Hawai'i Pacific, proved to be the match-winner with her three-set victory at No. 2, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. The senior dominated in the first set before overcoming a second-set deficit to roll past her opponent in set three, winning the first game and never looking back.
With the win, PLNU sets a new NCAA-era program record for wins in a single season with 20.
Â
Point Loma (20-4 overall) will now take on No. 1 overall seed Barry (23-1) in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 6 a.m. PST / 9 a.m. EST. Barry finished as national runner-up last season after winning the previous six national championships.
