PLNU RUNS RAMPANT IN 4-0 WIN OVER MINES

(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Men's Soccer ran rampant on offense against (RV) Colorado School of Mines, scoring twice in each half in a 4-0 victory on Thursday evening.

"It's so early in the season that there's so much stuff we still have to do, but I'm happy that we got a clean sheet obviously and happy that we scored four goals," Head Coach Phil Wolf said. "I'm pleased with a lot of the pieces but still a lot to improve."

Emmett Layman gave the Sea Lions a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, collecting a diagonal ball from Ryan Doyle and running at the Mines defense before unleashing a shot into the top right corner from 20 yards out.

Keoni Young then doubled Point Loma's lead 15 minutes later with his first career PLNU goal. Elijah Langford switched the ball to Young on the right wing to cut onto his left foot and beat the keeper at the near post.

"I'm proud of him," Wolf said of Young. "He's been a guy who's had to wait most of last year and then has had to wait this year. He's been showing signs of it in training, so I'm really happy that he got a goal and hopefully that's something he can build on."

The Sea Lions then continued their offensive onslaught in the second half with goals just two minutes apart.

Cole Friesen scored his team-leading third goal of the season to make it 3-0 Point Loma in the 69th minute, as a combination between Simon Sagal and Layman played Friesen through at goal to calmly slot his left-footed shot into the back of the net.

"Cole's a good player," Wolf said. "He's going to be very dangerous here and he's already shown he's really dangerous against some top teams. I'm super excited about his influence. He just has a very natural way about him, and he's a really clinical finisher."

Friesen returned the favor to Layman soon thereafter in the 71st, as Diego Chavez found Friesen to whip a ball across the face of goal for Layman to smash home from close range for his second goal of the game.

"Emmett's a really big player for us," Wolf said. "We've been really pushing him hard to focus on that final product. He took that first chance so was feeling a little bit more confidence. I'm happy for him."

Jeremy Caringella made four saves in goal for the team's first shutout of the season.

"We really tried to focus on transition moments defensively and I thought we handled it a little bit better," Wolf said.

Point Loma (1-1-1 overall) will host Regis on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. as PLNU plays another team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

"That conference is a pretty tested conference, so it's not an opponent that hasn't seen people like us," Wolf said. "I expect them to have a very good game with Biola tonight and then it'll be a good game on Saturday."
