RESULTS

(SAN MARCOS, Calif.) PLNU Women's Cross Country couldn't have started its 2025 season much better.

Maddie Reeves won the individual title at the Cougar Challenge on Saturday in a program record 6K time of 20:48.8, while Point Loma placed second as a team with 38 points, just five points behind race winners Cal Poly Pomona.

PLNU is ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA preseason rankings, while CPP is third.

"We had a great season opener," said Jake Poyner, Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. "Our front seven went out with some strategic reservation early, and responded really well in the second half of the race when we asked them to go."

Three Sea Lions finished in the top-10 and six placed in the top-16, as Reeves became the first Point Loma runner to win a race since Zita Molnar in 2019.

Freshmen Audrey Buckley (21:29.0) and Jocelyn Gibson (21:32.3) had impressive Point Loma debuts, finishing seventh and 11th respectively.

Returning All-PacWest returners Elizabeth Satterlee (21:32.2) and Zaila Smith (21:35.2) placed 10th and 13th, while Lia-Luisa Markert (21:40.0) crossed the finish line in 16th.

Bree Gentry rounded out PLNU's front seven runners by finishing 38th in a time of 22:13.4.

"We accomplished what we wanted to, and for a lot of our returners, we had some really fun comparisons on this course from last year to this year," Poyner said.

The team's top-five runners had a 47 second gap between them on Saturday, a significant improvement from last year's 1:25 when the Sea Lions won the meet.

Point Loma races next at the Riverside Invite, hosted by UC Riverside, on Sep. 27 at 7:15 a.m.

"We are right where we want to be with the exciting parts of the season in front of us," Poyner said. "I'm proud of the team for their composure, camaraderie and desire to be patient in their build."
