(SAN DIEGO)
Elijah Langford scored a late consolation goal but it wasn't enough for PLNU Men's Soccer to overcome Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, with the Yotes spoiling the Sea Lions' season opener by a 2-1 margin.
Â
CSUSB took the lead in the 22nd minute from the penalty spot before doubling its advantage in the 82nd, taking advantage of Point Loma sending numbers forward in search of an equalizer.
Â
Curtis Collazos nearly found the back of the net with a curling left-footed shot from outside the box earlier in the second half, while
Emmett Layman threatened down the left flank, drawing a yellow card and having a close-range shot blocked.
Â
The Sea Lions finally managed to breakthrough with just 14 seconds remaining, as Langford opened his account in 2025.
Â
Â
Cole Friesen, who missed just wide with a header at the back post in the first half, combined with Collazos to send Langford in on goal.
Â
Collazos' brilliant first-time ball was met in stride by Langford, who cut onto his favored left foot and tucked his shot inside the left post.
Â
But with only 14 seconds left in regulation, there wasn't enough time for PLNU to find a tying goal, as CSUSB left with all three points.
Â
Point Loma (0-1 overall) now hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to take on No. 18 Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday at 7 p.m.
