(SAN DIEGO) Stellar pitching and a pair of six-run innings fueled No. 15 PLNU Baseball to a doubleheader sweep of Hawai'i Pacific on Friday in the conference openers for both teams.
Vaughn Neckar threw a one-hit, seven-inning shutout in game two, with Point Loma scoring all six of its runs in the first inning of a 6-0 victory.
That came after PacWest Pitcher of the Week
Derek Silva threw six innings and allowed only two runs in game one, as the Sea Lions scored four runs in the second and six in the sixth of a 12-2 win that ended via run rule after seven innings.
Neckar carried a no-hitter into the seventh and final inning of the nightcap, retiring the first batter he faced in the inning before a base hit up the middle ended his no-hit bid. That was one of only two batters to reach base all game, as the freshman right hander walked only one while striking out six.
Aiden Arriaga gave Neckar all the run support he needed with a bases-clearing triple that sparked the Sea Lions' six-run bottom of the first.
In game one,
Mason Cook highlighted PLNU's four-run second inning with a two-run homer to right that gave Point Loma the lead for good, while Arriaga and
Jake Schwartz each had an RBI-single.
PLNU then broke the game open with a six-run sixth, which
Tristan Moore capped off with a three-run blast to right center.
Point Loma (6-3 overall, 2-0 PacWest) concludes its four-game series with HPU on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 11 a.m. in Carroll B. Land Stadium.
