SEA LIONS SWEEP SHARKS TO OPEN PACWEST PLAY

(SAN DIEGO) Mason Cook's walk-off base hit helped No. 15 PLNU Baseball complete a four-game sweep of Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday, as the Sea Lions defeated the Sharks 10-0 and 9-8 to close out a perfect opening weekend to PacWest play.

Cook capped off the sweep with a two-out, walk-off single through the right side in the bottom of the seventh of game two, which followed up his RBI-double that clinched Point Loma's win via run rule after seven innings of game one.

Glen Huggins hurled seven scoreless innings in Saturday's opener, only allowing a pair of hits while striking out five, as Point Loma posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since April 28, 2023 against Academy of Art.

Tyler Stull opened the scoring with a three-run blast to right center, setting the stage for PLNU's second run-rule victory in the series.

Then in game two, after HPU scored twice in the top of the first, PLNU answered back with five runs in the bottom half, as Owen May led things off with a solo shot before Josiah Rodriguez cleared the bases with a grand slam.

The visitors battled back to tie the game with three runs in the top of the third before retaking the lead with another run in the fifth, before Rodriguez went yard for a second time in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up once more.

However, HPU went back ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, only for the Sea Lions to scrap their way back to win in walk-off fashion.

Tristan Moore hit his second homer of the series to make it 8-8 before PLNU loaded the bases with nobody out. The Sharks then threatened to send the game to extras with back-to-back strikeouts, but Cook had other ideas with his base hit to right.

Point Loma (8-3 overall, 4-0 PacWest) returns to Carroll B. Land Stadium on Wednesday to continue PacWest play against Chaminade. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
