(SAN DIEGO) No. 12 PLNU Baseball outscored Vanguard 26-1 on Saturday, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader to extend its best ever start to PacWest play.
Â
Point Loma's magic number on the day was 10, as starting pitcher
Derek Silva struck out 10 batters in a 10-0 game one victory, before the Sea Lions scored 10 runs in the fifth inning of game two to improve to 10-0 in conference play.
Â
PLNU is 10-0 in PacWest play for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.
Â
Silva didn't allow a run in his six innings of work, as he has now thrown back-to-back six-inning scoreless outings. The Sea Lions' shutout was its fifth of the season.
Â
After Point Loma scored twice in the first inning of game one thanks to a Vanguard throwing error,
Mason Cook's three-run blast capped off a five-run bottom of the second.
Â
Â
PLNU then won via run rule after eight innings following
Tristan Moore's two-RBI triple off the wall in center, with
Ryan Ruch scoring the game-clinching run on a throwing error.
Â
Ruch then provided the big hit of game two with a pinch-hit grand slam as part of PLNU's 10 run fifth, which is its most runs in an inning since scoring 11 in third inning of a PacWest Tournament matchup with Holy Names on May 10, 2023.
Â
Hank Smith and
Josiah Rodriguez also homered in the win, with
Jake Schwartz providing a bases-clearing double.
Â
Vaughn Neckar improved to 5-0 on the season with his five innings of one-run ball, as the freshman right hander struck out seven.
Â
The Sea Lions' two relievers on the day (
Matt Elliot,
Matt Garrison) both pitched two scoreless innings of relief apiece.
Â
Point Loma (14-4 overall, 10-0 PacWest) will travel to Costa Mesa on Monday to play at Vanguard and close out the four-game series between the two teams.
