SEA LIONS STAKE CLAIM WITH WINS OVER SHARKS, VULCANS

(HONOLULU) PLNU Women's Tennis staked its claim as one of the top contenders in the PacWest Conference with a pair of 5-2 wins against Hawai'i Pacific and Hawai'i Hilo on Friday and Saturday.

HPU entered the weekend ranked atop the conference seeding list, before the defending PacWest champions Point Loma came up with its biggest win of the season.

The Sea Lions won in doubles, with Perla Conde Vendrell/Alina Kupfer prevailing 6-4 at No. 2 before Melissa Zirkle/Zoe Moley clinched the doubles point with their 7-5 victory at No. 3.

Kupfer then won in straight sets at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-3) but HPU managed to level the match at 2-2.

From there, PLNU won the final three remaining singles matches, with Conde Vendrell (6-4, 3-6, 6-1), Moley (6-7, 7-5, 6-2) and Zirkle (6-4, 6-7, 6-4) all winning in three sets on Courts 4-6.

The Sea Lions followed that up with the same margin of victory against Hawai'i Hilo, as Kupfer, Conde Vendrell and Moley won their singles matches once again.

Anna Pallencaoe also prevailed at No. 2 (6-1, 7-6) after PLNU won both doubles matches to finish.

Point Loma (13-3 overall) concludes its trip to the Aloha State on Monday with a neutral-site match against Colorado Mesa at the UH Manoa Tennis Complex at 5:45 p.m. PT / 2:45 p.m. HT.
