(SAN DIEGO) PLNU Women's Cross Country opened its 2026 season at the SDSU Coastal Classic on Thursday evening, raced at Mission Valley River Park.

"We train there pretty frequently so the girls were really prepared both mentally and physically to have a great race," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Avery Takata said. "They did a really good job of setting the tone for the season."

Competing against all NCAA Division I programs, Point Loma placed fifth among all teams, with a trio of Sea Lions finishing in the top-30 individually.

"We assigned them very clear jobs that they were supposed to do and they executed so well," Takata said. "Something that I was really looking for last night was execution and they crushed it."

Freshman Sarah Kim led the team in her first career collegiate race, crossing the line in 23rd place (18:37.8).

"Having a freshman come in first for our team was really cool," Takata said. "She was very determined and headstrong, so it was really fun to watch her."

Jocelyn Gibson (18:42.2) was close behind in 25th, followed by Mikayla Horning (18:47.6) in 30th.

Telina Chicca (18:50.6) was as a spot behind in 31st, while Sabrina Fleig (36th - 18:58.0), Heidi Manson (37th - 18:59.4) and Michelle Ramos (39th - 19:01.1) all placed in the top-40.

"The other teams were getting after it and have some really great runners," Takata said. "It was a really fast race which was good for us to be able to get in the mix and feel what that feels like."

Point Loma runs next at the Riverside Invite, hosted by UC Riverside, on Sep. 19.
