EAGLES TAKE CONFERENCE OPENER FROM SEA LIONS

(LA MIRADA, Calif.) No. 13 PLNU Volleyball opened PacWest play on Tuesday night at Biola, with the Eagles coming away with a three-set (19-25, 23-25, 25-27) victory.

Tuesday's loss marked Point Loma's first defeat in its conference opener since 2017, while also ending a four-match winning streak against BU.

The Sea Lions had more kills (43-38), assists (39-35) and digs (52-51) than the Eagles, but Biola held a crucial 9-2 advantage in service aces and committed six fewer errors offensively.

After a 12-0 run in set one helped give BU a 1-0 lead in the match, the two teams traded runs in set two, with PLNU leading by as many as 10-6. A Kyra Miles kill tied the set late at 23-23 only for the Eagles to score the final two points of the second stanza and give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

The Sea Lions then led 23-21 in set three before Miles gave the visitors set point up 24-23, but Biola responded by scoring four of the final five points in the third to clinch the match.

Miles, Hailey Clark and Gianna Callari all had eight kills apiece, with Sophia Baugh dishing out 35 assists. Libero Kira Federico led all players with 19 digs.

Point Loma (4-3 overall, 0-1 PacWest) continues conference play on Saturday at Westmont. First serve in Santa Barbara is scheduled for 7 p.m.
