Road Woes in Santa Barbara

Long Day Ends in Tough Loss

BOX SCORE

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.  - The PLNU volleyball team will drive 436 miles during Friday's roadie to Westmont and back. The trip home might seem a lot longer after the NAIA 14th-ranked Sea Lions were defeated 3-1 by the Warriors (25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20). Point Loma lost despite 24 kills from Tabitha Henken.

Control of the first set was claimed early by the Warriors due to five kills apiece from Marie Trudelle, Ciara Turner, and Alison Sharp. The combination of Westmont's hitting with five errors from Point Loma sealed the 25-18 victory for the Warriors.

After a very tight first half of the second set, the Sea Lions broke away fast thanks to the hitting of Alyssa Dwyer, Tabitha Henken, and Maddie Dahms. Similarly to the first set, the Warriors contributed their own errors to help Point Loma snag the 25-17 win.

Down 19-11 in the third set, the Sea Lions rallied back all the way to reach a 23-23 tie. Yet a heartbreaking service error followed by a bad set led them to a 23-25 defeat.

While the fourth set did not end as closely as the third, it too concluded in an error for Point Loma. After fighting back from a 20-15 deficit, the Sea Lions were able to hinder Westmont from quickly taking the win, but were unable to prevent it. The Warrior's Turner was red-hot down the stretch. A service error from PLNU topped it off, and WC took the set 25-20, and the game 3-1.

When the NAIA No. 14-ranked Sea Lions took on the Warriors over a month ago, PLNU swept unranked Westmont in three sets.

The Warriors barely outhit the Sea Lions .239 to .231 while making less than half of Point Loma's recorded errors (12-25). PLNU had six service errors while WC had seven.

Henken recorded the most kills of the night with 24. Dahms and Dwyer added 23 together while Destiny McIntyre chipped in seven. Westmont's Sharp had 15. Turner and Trudelle following closely behind with 12 and 15.

Aimee Bird had 51 assists and Nicole Eiler was a team leader with 25 digs. Alyssa Pitkin and Henken had 12 apiece while Bird added 15.

Point Loma recorded 4 blocks compared to Westmont's 9.

The loss drops the Sea Lions to 14-11, 8-8 in GSAC and improves the Warriors to 11-13, 5-10 GSAC. PLNU has lost five-of-seven.

Loma will host Hope International University on Tuesday, Nov 2 at 7:00 pm.
