Men's Soccer Notches First GSAC Win

PLNU 3, SDCC 1

BOX SCORE

EL CAJON, Calif. – PLNU took their first win of their Golden State Athletic Conference on Tuesday after beating San Diego Christian College 3-1. Francois Furaln, Griffin Fuller, and Erick Melendez all contributed to the three goals throughout the game that secured a victory for PLNU.

The Sea Lions are now 4-6 overall (surpassing last year's total) and 1-3 GSAC. With a rough start to Point Loma's conference season, the men are excited with how well they played against the Hawks.

Point Loma came out ready to play Tuesday. As a team, PLNU took 12 shots, closely followed by SDCC with 10. Point Loma scored one goal in the first half and two in the second, while keeping the Hawks away from the net until there were just four minutes left in the game.

The Sea Lion's freshman keeper, Carter Phillips, had a strong game with four saves and one goal against, while the Hawks keeper, Cameron Riley, was kept busy with four saves and three goals against.

Phillips said, “We came out very focused today and played hard. We finished all our chances and it was a good team win.”

With only two minutes passed on the scoreboard, PLNU senior Francois Furlan was fouled by SDCC's Frank Zimmerman in the box. Furlan scored for the Sea Lions on the ensuing penalty kick.

During the second half, the Sea Lions put up two more goals. Point Loma freshman Griffin Fuller scored in the 56th minute to double the lead. Fuller was assisted with a slot from Austin Fares, while on the run for the far goal post.

“We came out hard and got an early goal," Fares said. "We dominated much of the game and played well as a team. If we keep this up then we can win our upcoming games.”

The Sea Lions had all the momentum, and with twelve minutes left in the game, PLNU senior Erick Melendez showed no mercy for SDCC goalkeeper Riley. Melendez used excellent footwork in a tight space to open up a slot for a goal right past Riley to make the score 3-0.

With four minutes remaining, San Diego's Brent Oglesby scored his first goal of the season with an assist by Jordan Abad to make the fina score 3-1, PLNU.

"It was nice to get our first win in league but we have a lot of work to do to get into the playoffs," Sea Lion senior Kyle Ertel said. “ We have a couple of tough games coming up and we need to keep playing how we are now.”

San Diego Christian is now 0-4 in conference.

On Saturday October 9, the Sea Lions host Hope International at home. The Royals are in a five game losing streak, but will be prepared when they arrive at PLNU Field for the 3:30 pm tilt.
