Men's Soccer vs. San Diego Christian

Sea Lions Snap Skid With Convincing Win

PLNU snapped a six-game losing skid with a 5-2 win over crosstown San Diego Christian Wednesday afternoon. Senior midfielder Jon Fielding had a hand in four of the goals, scoring one and assisting on three others and Grant Cowles notched a pair of goals.

The Sea Lions improved to 2-7 overall, 1-3 in GSAC play while the Hawks fell to 3-7, 0-4 GSAC.

PLNU's Austin Fares put in the first score of the game, when he took a pass in the 13th minute on a breakaway by Fielding who drew out the SDCC defense before tapping the ball to Fares for the easy score.

Ten minutes later, Fielding made the score 2-0 PLNU when he slid a penalty kick past the Hawk keeper Christopher Cozzi. Less than a minute later Cowles posted his first goal of the year when Fielding threw the ball into the SDCC box and through the arms of Cozzi for the easy tap in.

PLNU went into the break up 3-0 and looked like they might run away with the conference tilt after Cowles scored his second goal of the game in the 62nd minute off a deflection and Erick Melendez made the score 5-0 on a deflected attempt by Fielding in the 65th minute.

The Hawks prevented the shut out with a goal by Ignacio Finlay in the 70th minute. Matt Wolters added the final score of the game, a goal in the 88th minute for the 5-2 final.

PLNU controlled the action throughout, taking 23 total shots, 10 on goal to 11 shots by the Hawks, five of which were on target. Melendez attempted the most shots - six - with two on goal. Fielding took five shots as did Francois Furlan.

Cozzi made four saves for SDCC and backup Kyle Cabezas-Jones had one save. Eric Leboffe had three saves for the Sea Lions.

The Sea Lions head up to Fullerton on Saturday to take on Hope International starting at 2:30 pm.
