Sea Lions On A Winning Streak

A win is a win, and two straight constitutes a winning streak. The Sea Lions prevailed in their second match in a row, defeating Hope International 3-2 on Saturday. PLNU received goals from Matt Garrett, Francois Furlan and Grant Cowles. Two of the scores were assisted by Jon Fielding.

PLNU improves to 3-7 overall, 2-3 in GSAC play. The Royals fell to 5-5-3, 0-4 GSC

Garrett put in the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute. The ball wasn't cleared out properly by the Royals and Garrett put it in from the left wing for his first goal of the season.

Hope International charged back and took the lead after a goal in the 37th minute by Matthew Howard and a penalty kick in the 47th minute from Edgar Bran.

With twenty minutes remaining, it looked like the Royals might be headed to the win. But the third goal of the season by Furlan in the 70th minute and another goal from Cowles two minutes later completed the comeback and sealed the win. Fielding assisted on both scores, crossing the shot to Furlan and his free kick bouncing off the post to Cowles.

The PLNU defense took care of the rest, preventing HIU from tying the game.

"We played really well over the last 30 minutes," said PLNU coach Tim Hall. "It was a good win for us."

A very even match statistic-wise, PLNU had a slim 14-13 shots advantage and had a 6-3 shots on goal advantage. Royal keeper Matt Fike had three saves while Sea Lion keeper Eric Leboffe had one.

Only one card was issued on Saturday.

PLNU hosts California Baptist on Wednesday starting at 3:00 pm.
