Women's Soccer vs. Cal Baptist

Sea Lions Topple California Baptist

"It's a huge one," PLNU coach Tim Hall said of his team's win over CBU.

A slow start to the season resulted in the Sea Lions tumbling from the top-25 NAIA rankings. But PLNU is officially back on track after upsetting No. 3-ranked California Baptist 2-0 Tuesday.

The win was the third consecutive for the Sea Lions and just the second this season against a ranked opponent. A crucial victory, PLNU upped their overall record to 8-3-1 and evened up their GSAC mark to 3-3.

"I think this boosts us up for the rest of the season," said PLNU freshman keeper Tiffany Kracy. "It shows that we can beat anyone if we put our minds to it."

The Sea Lions had a couple of golden opportunities slip by early on. They finally found the net 27 minutes into the game when Lauren Leslie rung one off the post from thirty yards out. The final goal came seven minutes into the second half when Lauren Abarca fired a quick one-timer past CBU keeper Emily Evanson.

Both PLNU goals were assisted by Kelsey Lundberg.

Though the Sea Lions had a 2-0 lead, the match was far from over and far from decided. The Lancers, who were No. 1 in the NAIA until Tuesday's rankings, kept up the pressure for the entire second half. Kracy notched eight saves - a few at point-blank range - to prevent CBU from getting back into the match.

"I was set and ready," said Kracy on her stops. "I was in a groove and made the saves."

Abarca led the offensive charge with three shots on goal and found pay dirt for the fifth time this season.

"It feels wonderful," said Abarca on KPLR radio. "We started out slow. I think we were nervous. Once we took the field and realized that we could do this, we really stepped up our game."

The Sea Lions fired 14 shots, 10 on goal compared with CBU's 15, eight of which were on target. Emily Evanson had seven saves for the Lancers, with one save credited to the team.

The Lancers have been bit by the injury bug and suffered their second loss in a row to fall to 11-2-1 overall and 4-2 in GSAC.

Fabiola Dasilva attempted half of the Lancers' shots on goal, as she booted four into the hands of Kracy.

The Sea Lions will try to keep up the momentum when they face Westmont College on the road Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
