NAIA No. 22-ranked PLNU suffered an excruciating 1-0 loss in double overtime to fifth-ranked Vanguard Wednesday afternoon at VUSC Soccer Field. Lion midfielder Gabriela Valles ended the Golden State Athletic Conference tilt with a goal with just one minute left to before the contest would have been a tie.
"It's a tough loss," said Sea Lion coach Tim Hall. "The girls played brilliantly, though. It was a great, great match. Either team could have won, but unfortunately for us, they came out on top. It's hard to take, but it is what it is."
A win could have put PLNU (9-4-1, 4-4 GSAC) into fourth place in the conference standings, but instead the Sea Lions will drop down to sixth. The second place Lions improved to 11-1-1 overall, 5-1-1 GSAC.
Wednesday was the second PLNU match in a row that was decided in double overtime. Last Saturday it was the Sea Lions came out on top with time ticking down against Westmont.
Wednesday's tilt was even from start to finish. VUSC barely outshot PLNU 13-12, though the home team Lions were more accurate in their attempts, taking seven shots on goal to three from the Sea Lions.
Since neither team scored during regulation, the match went into sudden death overtime. The first 10 minutes of overtime passed without a single shot taken. The two squads started a second, and final, overtime.
Vanguard midfielders Karri Currier and Danielle Dintino tried shots in the 102nd and 105th minutes but NAIA Defensive Player of the Week Tiffany Kracy turned back both for her fifth and sixth saves of the contest.
PLNU midfielder Lauren Abarca attempted the final shot for her team, in the 107th minute, but the ball was snared by VUSC goalkeeper Jillian Foss.
Finally, at the 108:57 mark, Valles took a cross by Kristen Rice and knocked it past the charging Kracy and into the right side of the PLNU net to end the game.
The Sea Lions host ninth-place Biola on Saturday, the match starting at 3:30 pm.
