The NAIA No. 9-ranked Sea Lions were edged 5-4 by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final match of the regular season Friday at the PLNU Courts. Point Loma fell to 11-11 while the NCAA DIII third-ranked Stags improved to 20-5.
Despite the setback, PLNU is in line to receive an at-large berth to the NAIA National Championship Tournament that begins on May 18. Seedings and tournament schedule will be announced next week.
Doubles play kicked off action on Friday. Early on it look like PLNU was in shape to win all three points but the Stags came back to win on court one. That match proved costly because the Sea Lions managed just two points in singles play.
Curt Wheeler, playing on his home court for the final time, bested Micky Lim 6-2, 6-3. When
Tyler Bowman came out on top in a marathon 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(5), the match had already been decided in CMS's favor.
Not only did court one host a disappointing loss in doubles, the most heartbreaking loss in singles came there too. PLNU's
Joel Myers has been red-hot in duel matches of late, and had his chances, but Stag No. 1 Robbie Erani prevailed in a pair of tie-breakers, 7-6(4) and 7-6(5).
