Women's Basketball vs. Concordia

Sea Lions Shutdown Concordia

The No. 8-ranked Sea Lions recovered from a weekend loss to No. 7 Azusa Pacific University with a 68-41 victory over Concordia University Tuesday evening. PLNU improved to 22-3 overall and 13-3 in conference while the Eagles fell to 10-14 overall and 3-13 in GSAC.

The Sea Lions defense shut down the visitors, limiting CUI to 19.7 percent from the field while shooting 43.4 percent. PLNU also out-rebounded the Eagles 47-40. The home team also made 20-28 from the stripe, a place where they really struggled on Saturday.

Concordia's junior guard Nicole Fu started the action with a three-pointer, giving the Eagles their only lead of the game. A bucket and a free throw from PLNU senior guard Liah Ector tied things up, however. The Sea Lions totaled seven straight points before Concordia could answer.

Later in the first half, another run, this time 12 unanswered points, put PLNU ahead by 15, and Green and Gold held on to that lead into half time, 31-16.

The Sea Lions had a 16-point streak in the second half that gave them an insurmountable 28 point lead, and the team led by as much as 31 before they settled for the 27 point margin of victory. CUI was held scoreless for over seven minutes at one point in the second half and went nearly nine minutes between making a field goal.

Senior forward Colleen Planeta led the PLNU offense with 23 points and four assists, and made a significant contribution on defense, as well, with seven rebounds and three blocks. Ector shot double digits, too, scoring 17 points with four assists and nine rebounds. PJ Hanson and Jil Haentges each scored seven points in the win. Hanson grabbed a team-high 13 boards.

Fu, who had 10 points, was the only Eagle to score in double digits. Eleven Eagles got into scoring column, though.

The Sea Lions will take to the road for a matchup versus Westmont College Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
