BOX SCORE
SAN DIEGO - The match versus PLNU and the The Master's was in overtime, tied 1-1 and looking like it was going to a second OT. But with 30 ticks on the clock, David Alegria got ahold of a failed clear on a previous attempt on goal and put the ball into the net to give the visiting Mustangs a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at PLNU Field.
The loss drops the Sea Lions to 3-4 overall, 0-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play, while TMC, which opened the year ranked No. 2, improves to 4-1-2, 1-0 GSAC.
The Mustangs controlled the match through most of the first half, quickly going up 1-0 when Doug Armstrong scored in the third minute of action. That would be the score heading into half despite an 8-1 shots advantage held by the Mustangs.
PLNU gained more control in the second, eventually outshooting TMC 8-6 in the stanza. Finally, in minute 77,
Austin Fares grabbed a loose ball and in one motion wheeled around and drove a goal home to even the score.
Even at 1-all after 90 minutes of action, the match went into overtime. The two GSAC defenses held steady for most of the 10 minute period until the Mustangs out together the winning drive in the final minute.
TMC outshot PLNU 16-9, 5-3 shots on goal. Fares and
Austin Rovazzini attempted two shots apiece. The Sea Lions took four corners to a pair by the Mustangs.
Point Loma next hosts Concordia at 1:00 pm Wednesday.
