Back at Full Strength and On Winning Track

Sea Lions Sweep Dominguez Hills

IRVINE, Calif. - Back at full strength, the NAIA No. 14-ranked Sea Lions swept NCAA DII CSU Dominguez Hills Friday in the team's first match at the Asics Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament. The first two sets were close, but PLNU prevailed in each (25-23, 25-21, 25-17).

The Sea Lions evened their season record to 3-3 while the Toros drop their season opener.

PLNU hit at a .412 clip against CSUDH, led by 15 kills on 29 attempts (.517) by Tabitha Henken. The All-American junior also posted a team-high 11 digs. Alyssa Pitkin returned to the court with 12 kills and nine digs. Those two made up the bulk of the PLNU offense, the next leader in kills was Karleigh Kacmarek with five.

The setter duties were split again. Aimee Bird had 19 assists with Natalie Hamill adding 14. Defensive specialist Nicole Eiler had eight digs in the win. The middle blocking duo of Alyssa Dwyer and Destiny McIntyre each contributed five total blocks as the Sea Lions out blocked the Toros 11 to 0. Hannah Saber was effective with three aces.

Denise Devine did most of the damage for CSUDH, ripping 16 winners. Cassidy Devine had 29 assists with Shelbi Vopnford adding 10 digs in the loss.

Even with some lopsided numbers in their favor, the match was anything but easy for PLNU. The first set saw 11 ties and three lead changes, the Sea Lions eeking out the two-point win. Point Loma slowly gained momentum over the course of the match, however, winning by four in the second and cruising to an easy win in the third.

Point Loma takes on Great Falls at 9:00 pm later Friday night.
