PLNU Rallies for Comeback Win at Fresno

Sea Lions trailed by 14 before second-half run

BOX SCORE

FRESNO, Calif. – Crissa Jackson scored 21 points to lead Point Loma Nazarene to a 62-59 win at Fresno Pacific on Saturday. The junior guard was key as the Sea Lions took over the game in the second half to climb out of a 14-point hole and rally for a huge comeback victory.

PLNU improved to 8-7 overall, 3-4 against Golden State Athletic Conference teams while FPU fell to 7-11, 0-8 GSAC.

Fresno Pacific grabbed control in the first half of the conference tilt, jumping out to an 18-7 lead after six minutes of play. Point Loma went on a 16-3 run, however, to not only catch the Sunbirds, but to go ahead 23-21 at the 3:14 mark.

The Sea Lions managed just two more points in the half, though, and FPU headed into the break in front 30-25. The Sunbirds pushed their advantage to a game-high 14 in the second and seemed to be headed to a win.

But PLNU's Callie Rhoads and Kiley Berlinski hit on back-to-back three pointers to stem the tide and Berlinksi hit another trey to half the gap to seven points. Jackson then made a jumper and Lindsey Hill sank a pair of free throws to keep the Green and Gold on a roll.

Brianna Colon contributed a pair of buckets on consecutive possessions and suddenly the Sea Lions were down by only four. Jackson evened the score after making a pair of jumpers and then put Loma ahead with a layup at 6:05 remaining to complete a 27-8 run.

After a FPU bucket Jackson kept up the momentum with four straight points on four made free throws to put Point Loma up for good. Hill made two more buckets over the remaining minutes and Colon added another jumper as the Sea Lions sealed the win.

“A comeback like this really encourages every one of us to hang in there and fight no matter what,” said Jackson. “We are a young team and we need inspiration like this. We have a lot of potential and what it takes to win in this conference.”

Point Loma returns home on Thursday for a 5:30 pm match up against Biola.
