SAN DIEGO - Biola University outrebounded Point Loma Nazarene by 19 on Thursday evening in the Golden Gymnasium, where the Eagles won 69-48. Eighteen of Biola's rebounds were offensive, compared to four from the Sea Lions.
When PLNU went up 9-0 three minutes into the first half, it looked as though the result would be vastly different. The Eagles' caught up quickly with a series of timely shots, rebounds, and steals. By the seven -minute mark, the score was tied 20-all, and Biola would take control from there.
As simple as it sounds, while the Eagle's were making shots in the remaining seven minutes, the Sea Lions were missing them. Though Crissa Jackson and Callie Rhoads helped PLNU come back within two points of the visiting team, in the end, they left the court down 29-34.
In the second half, the lead was never changed and the score was never tied: Biola had control the entire way. The Eagles' hovered around a ten point lead for the majority of the opening second half minutes, and quickly after reached the largest lead of the night, putting themselves 25 points ahead.
While the two teams committed nearly the same amount of turnovers (PLNU 16, BU 12), had very close shooting percentages (PLNU 36.2 percent, BU 41.5 percent), and did the exact same damage at the free throw line (6-7), Biola won the rebounding game 44-25. As mentioned earlier, the Eagle's offensive boards blew the Sea Lions' out of the water, 18-4.
The lack of offensive rebounds for Point Loma was a huge contribution to their 48-69 loss, dropping to 3-5 in GSAC. Biola improves its record to 8-2.
Jackson still managed to shine with 16 points, and Lindsey Hill and Kiley Berlinski recorded a combined 11 rebounds.
Biola's Jessilyn Conicelli was an unstoppable force with 14 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Jennifer French, Lauren Gustafson, and Emily Drews all scored in the double digits for the Eagles.
The Sea Lions are set to play Hope International University in Fullerton on Saturday, Jan 22 at 5:30 pm.
