SAN DIEGO -
Though the Sea Lions put on a good show for the first 30 minutes of play on Saturday night in the Golden Gymnasium, fizzling out in the final ten brought them to a 60-45 defeat from NAIA No. 2-ranked Westmont College.
Point Loma left the court at halftime with a six-point lead over the Warriors after trailing for the majority of the first half. After 16 minutes, it seemed like the Sea Lions just needed a little bit of warming up. With three minutes left in the half, the momentum began to change with the help of Kiley Berlinski's and Crissa Jackson's offensive and defensive contributions.
The Sea Lions held firm to their lead for the first ten minutes of play, but once they lost it, it was gone forever. In the remaining ten minutes Westmont inched further and further away with each possession. 12 unanswered points in four minutes put PLNU at their biggest disadvantage all night, with just six minutes left to play.
In those six minutes, Point Loma would only score on one free throw shot and two layups--clearly not enough to take on Westmont's already scored 12 points. In the end, the Warriors made the long bus ride back to Santa Barbara happy, 15 points ahead.
The Sea Lions shooting percentage dropped from 37 percent in the first half to 22 percent by the second, while Westmont went from 32 percent in the first half to 48 percent in the final stretch. The Warriors rebounded the ball 12 more times than PLNU and shot 72 percent from the free throw line compared to the Sea Lions' 60 percent.
Abby Boorman pulled down a dozen boards and put up eight points despite the loss. Jackson and Berlinski each shot more than ten points and had four rebounds apiece. Lindsey Hill and Brianna Colon each had five rebounds.
Westmont's Angel Blanco had 15 points and nine rebounds while Lisa Peterson recorded 11 points with eight boards and Katie Kittle put up ten and pulled down seven.
The Warriors advance to 7-5 in GSAC while the Sea Lions drop to 4-7.
Loma will host Vanguard University on Tuesday, Feb 1 at 5:30 pm.
