Sea Lions fall to 1-6 in the GSAC

box score

SAN DIEGO -- Biola got an overtime goal from Zach Bautista and defeated host Point Loma Nazarene 2-1 Saturday afternoon to ruin Senior Day. The Sea Lions fell to 7-7-1 overall, 1-6 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

The setback puts a damper on Loma's postseason chances as well. Currently, sitting in a tie for ninth place with just two regular season games left on the schedule, the Sea Lions trail Hope International by a game for the eighth and final playoff slot. A loss at HIU this Wednesday will keep PLNU out of the postseason.

It seemed that Saturday's match with Biola might be one that turned Point Loma's season around. After a scoreless opening half, Loma senior Tyler Hall put took a pass from Tyler Williams at midfield and went down the left side of the pitch before turning toward the Eagle net and blasting a shot into the goal.

That score at 57:33 held up despite PLNU playing a man down after one of their own earned a red card in the 62nd minute.  But, in the 86th minute, Biola's Collins Egbe lobbed a ball in from the far corner into the PLNU box which was headed in by Cody Shelton to even the tilt at 1-1.

The match went into overtime. Six minutes in Shelton ripped a corner to the Loma box where Bautista was waiting. His goal extended PLNU's GSAC losing streak to six games.

Despite his team being outshot 26-10 and 13-4 shots on goal, Loma keeper Keith Cline did all he could to stop the skid, saving 11 Biola shots on goal. Eagle keeper Aaron Fenlason had three saves.

The Eagles improved to 8-5-2, 3-4 GSAC and halted a three-game slide of their own.

At halftime the Sea Lions recognized five seniors playing in their final home game: Hall, Josh May, Austin Rovazinni, Paul Fuchs and Jeff Serbin,

PLNU's contest at Hope International on Wednesday starts at 3:00 p.m.
