FULLERTON, Calif. -- Point Loma Nazarene's postseason hopes came to a close after the team's 2-1 setback at Hope International on Wednesday. The loss will prevent the Sea Lions from finishing any higher than ninth place in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings and since only the top-eight teams qualify for the conference tournament, PLNU (7-8-1, 1-7 GSAC) will not be participating.Â
The Royals (6-7-1, 3-5 GSAC) scored in the first half but the Sea Lions responded with a goal in the 66th minute from Tyler Hall on corner from Jeff Serbin. The goal was Hall's fifth of the year and fourth against conference opponents.Â
Tied at 1-1, the match looked to be heading into overtime but Hope International scored the decisive goal with three minutes left to seal the win and lock up a playoff slot and hand PLNU its sixth-straight loss.
"It was very disappointing," Coach
Tim Hall said of the loss. "We fight back to even the score on a great goal but we let them go right through us with three minutes remaining."
The Sea Lions were outshot 13-7 total and 7-4 shots on goal. Loma keeper Keith Cline turned back five Royal attempts to keep the conference tilt close.
Point Loma's final match of the year is on Saturday at Westmont. Game time is at 2:30 pm.
