box score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- NAIA No. 3-ranked Point Loma Nazarene suffered its first loss in the last regular season match of year, losing at No. 18-ranked Westmont 2-0 Saturday. The Sea Lions, which already wrapped up their first-ever conference title, now stand at 16-1-1 overall, 8-1 GSAC.

The game remained scoreless through halftime, with both teams launching five shots each during the period.

The Sea Lions had their chances early to take the lead. Senior defender Erica Wessels and junior forward Brooke Winklepleck had headers in the 13th and 18th minutes respectively, but both shots were saved by Westmont goalkeeper Lindsey Smith.

The Sea Lions would never get that close for the rest of the contest.

During the second half, the host Warriors slowly began to take control of the game, firing shot after shot and keeping the ball on the Sea Lions' side of the field.

In the 81st minute, the Warriors (11-5, 6-3 GSAC) finally connected. Ashley Correa notched her eighth goal of the season on a free kick to give Westmont a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Aolani Rueff knocked in the clinching goal off a rebound from the PLNU defense.

Determined to preserve their perfect season, the Sea Lions tried for yet another late-game comeback. Unfortunately, none of their shots connected, and the Sea Lions were shut out for only the second time all season.

Junior Tiffany Kracy gave another strong performance in goal for the Sea Lions, collecting three saves. But the Warrior offense proved to be too much to handle, and the team gave up multiple goals in a game for the first time since August.

Despite the loss, the Sea Lions maintain the first seed in the GSAC Tournament, which kicks off Tuesday, Nov. 1 with a home contest against Fresno Pacific. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
