SAN DIEGO -- Point Loma Nazarene overcame a consistent downpour to beat visiting San Diego Christian Wednesday afternoon, 1-0. Sea Lion forward
Tyler Hall scored the game's lone goal in the 48th minute of play.
PLNU also played with a very heavy heart after learning of the untimely death of a player's family member.
“I am incredibly proud of how these kids pulled together in this very tough time,” said Sea Lion coach
Tim Hall. “Soccer wasn't that important, but the love and support they showed for their teammate was.”
The win ups PLNU's win total to 7-2-1 overall – one more victory than all of last season. The Sea Lions are now even in Golden State Athletic Conference play at 1-1. The Hawks fell to 2-6-1, 0-2 GSAC.
The weather certainly evened the conditions for the two crosstown rivals and the statistics show that. PLNU did have the advantage in shots (13-9) and shots on goal (6-2) but managed just the one goal.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the two sides went back onto the soggy pitch. Just three minutes later
Griffin Fuller sprinted to the left side of the field and charged into the SDCC box. It seemed as if he might take a shot but instead crossed the ball to the right side of the box where Hall slid in and sent home what would be the game-winning goal.
Each team had opportunities but neither side could finish, the final score remaining 1-0 PLNU. Hawk netminder Alex Cozzi made five saves. The Sea Lions utilized two keepers:
Carter Phillips and
Keith Cline. Each had one save.
Point Loma next hosts Fresno Pacific for a GSAC tilt on Saturday that begins at 2:00 pm.
