SAN DIEGO – Thanks to a solid effort from the entire lineup, Point Loma Nazarene picked up an 83-60 Golden State Athletic Conference win over Vanguard on Tuesday. The victory has the Sea Lions at 12-10 overall, 8-5 in the GSAC.
The Sea Lions led by as much as 11 points midway in the first half. But the Lions refused to go away, closing the gap to three before a late spurt saw Point Loma head into the break up 36-29.
Jake Johnston played the role of super sub, scoring 12 points through the first 20 minutes of action – twice as much as the next Sea Lion scorer. Alex Chapman kept Vanguard alive with nine points on a 4-for-5 shooting effort in the first.
The Lions continued to fight once action began in the second, shrinking the deficit to three on a couple of occasions early. The momentum slowly shifted to the Sea Lion side, though, as did the home team's lead. Point Loma was ahead by 10 with 13 minutes to play; a DeAndre Jones layup two minutes later pushed the lead to 16; back-to-back threes from Marek Klassen and Johnston had Loma in front by 22.
The Sea Lions cruised to the 23-point triumph.
Eleven Sea Lions saw action, each contributed to the win and all but two scored. Johnston paced the team with 19 points, making 7-of-10 from the field, 1-for-1 from long-range and all four free throw shots. Rhett Beal and Greg Murray each had 11 points with Klassen adding 10 points. James Hancock contributed nine points and 10 rebounds. Todd Campbell had seven points, Hayden Lescault and Axel Anderson had six points apiece.
Chapman scored a game-high 23 points for Vanguard (5-6, 3-10 GSAC). The only other Lion to reach double figures was Christopher Raybon with 11.
PLNU finished with a 48.3 shooting percentage while Vanguard shot 38.6 percent. The Sea Lions also had large advantages in rebounds (44-30) and assists (15-9).
The Green and Gold heads up to Azusa on Saturday where they will take on the seventh-ranked Cougars for in a 7:30 pm conference tilt. APU defeated Loma in double-overtime earlier in the season.
