IRVINE, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene's aspirations for an upset disappeared late in the first half of Tuesday night's match up at Concordia and the second-ranked Eagles came out on top 86-52.
A competitive 21-all game turned into a 36-23 Eagle lead at the break thanks to CUI's 15-2 run to end the stanza. Second-ranked CUI went on to claim its 23rd consecutive win and improve to 25-2, 17-0 GSAC. PLNU fell to 13-13 overall, 9-8.
The Sea Lions missed on their first three shots of the conference tilt and had just three points after six minutes of play. PLNU got it together, though, and put together a 14-6 spurt to catch the Eagles at 17-all. Loma took its only lead of the game on the next possession.
The two squads were even at 21 at the 6:55 mark when the wheels fell off the PLNU wagon.
An abundance of turnovers and missed shots plagued Loma which managed just one bucket from that point on until intermission. The Eagles, meanwhile, were able to put some distance between them and the visiting Sea Lions.
The second half started the way the first ended – with PLNU turning the ball over and struggling to make shots. Concordia's advantage continued to swell and reached 34 by game's end.
Point Loma shot just 30.9 percent from the field and made only 2-of-18 (11.1 %) from three point range. Greg Murray paced the Sea Lions with 15 points followed by 1 from James Hancock.
CUI shot 48.4 percent and scored 21 points off of 19 Sea Lion turnovers. Three Eagles reached double digits points led by Taylor King's 20.
With just three games to play in the regular season, Tuesday's loss puts PLNU in danger of slipping to seventh in the conference standings and an eventual first-round playoff match up at second-place Azusa Pacific.
Fourth-place Westmont topped The Master's tonight and now has a two-game lead over the Sea Lions and Fresno Pacific - which lost to Biola. California Baptist is currently seventh in the GSAC standings but beat San Diego Christian and is just one game behind PLNU and FPU.
The Sea Lions host Fresno Pacific at 4:30 pm Saturday while CBU hosts eighth-place TMC and Westmont takes on last-place SDCC. FPU beat PLNU in Fresno earlier this year, 89-78.
