Sea Lions Top Williams in Tough Match

PLNU wins hard-fought non-conference tilt 6-3

BOX SCORE

SAN DIEGO -- NAIA No. 6-ranked Point Loma Nazarene defeated visiting NCAA DIII tenth-ranked Williams (Mass.) in a hard fought non-conference match 6-3 Monday afternoon. The Sea Lions improved to 9-2 with the win while the Ephs fell to 1-1 on the season.

The match began with doubles and PLNU started tough, winning two of the three doubles points. No. 1 team Joel Myers and KC Ensley triumphed 8-2 and No. 3 team Angel Tavera and DJ Jaehnig did the same with 8-4. Court two saw Tyler Bowman and Diego Tavera fall 8-4.

Singles followed and the Green and Gold continued to frustrate the Ephs. Diego Tavera on court four concluded his match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Ensley finished well on court three with 6-2, then closed the second set 7-5.

Mike Zablan also played a close match on six but won in two sets, 7-6, 6-4. Zablan was the deciding point which decided the team win for Loma. Courts one, two and five all split sets and played close matches into the night.

Myers on one was the only PLNU players to win his third set with his final score being 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Bowman and Jaehnig were both defeated on courts two and five respectively. Bowman lost his first set 6-2 then came back to win his second 6-4 but in the end couldn't pull it off, losing the third 6-3. Jaehnig's match was even closer. He took the first set 7-6, then lost the second 6-4. The last set was a battle but Jaehnig was edged out 7-5.

Loma has the week to get pumped up for their next match on Saturday against GSAC No. 1 Fresno Pacific. The match will begin at 1 p.m. on Fresno's courts.
