Sea Lions edge the Eagles 5-4

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene men's tennis, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, edged No. 9 Concordia 5-4 Tuesday. The Sea Lions improved to 10-2 overall and are now 5-1 against Golden State Athletic Conference foes.

Play began with doubles and with the Sea Lions taking two of three points in some of the closest competition possible. Joel Myers and KC Ensley beat Andrey Potapkin and Kareem Berdai 9-7 on one while DJ Jaehnig and Angel Tavera topped Ryan McNamara and Patrick Szeremeta 8-4 on three. The Eagle duo of Bruno Santarelli and Jan Guler edged Tyler Bowman and Diego Tavera 9-8 on two.

Just as the ladies did before them, the PLNU men split the singles points with the Eagles to garner the team win. Bowman cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win on two versus Berdai; Diego Tavera beat McNamara in three sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 on four and Michael Zablan also won in three, taking down Szeremeta 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 on six. Both of those three setters were comeback wins for PLNU.

KC Ensley lost a three-setter to Santarelli on three 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 on court three with Myers losing to Potaakin 6-4, 6-1 on one and Jaehnig falling to Guler on five 6-4, 6-3.

Concordia's record is now 6-9 overall with 5-5 in GSAC.

Loma, which swept the season series with CUI, will now have their toughest match to date on Wednesday, taking on No. 1 Fresno Pacific on the Sunbird's home courts. The match will start at 1 p.m.
