SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Point Loma's No. 6 men's team was edged on Saturday by No. 7 Westmont in a close 5-4 loss. Loma's record drops to 12-4 overall and 7-3 in GSAC while Westmont improves to 9-5 overall and 7-4 in GSAC.
Doubles started PLNU out strong, winning two of the three doubles points. Loma's wins came from courts one and three. No. 3 team Angel Tavera and DJ Jaehnig won 8-5, a score matched by No. 1 team Joel Myers and KC Ensley soon afterwards. Surprisingly, 8-5 was also the final score on court two, though Sea Lions Diego Tavera and Tyler Bowman lost that match.
The singles matches that followed tossed points back and forth between the two teams. The first point went to Loma with Mike Zablan's win on court six, 6-0, 6-1. Then Westmont came back with Brian Cox overtaking PLNU's Bowman on court two 7-5, 6-4 and Jaehnig on court five falling 6-4, 6-1. The score was tied 3-3.
The next point went back to the Sea Lions as Myers pulled off a 6-3 win in the third set after losing the first 2-6 and winning the second 6-4.
That was the last match Loma would win as Westmont took the next two points in drawn out third set rallys. First to fall was Ensley on court three, winning the first 6-2, then losing the second 6-2, and finally losing the third 6-4. Last was Diego Tavera on four, losing 6-4, then winning 6-2, but eventually losing 6-3 in the third.
Loma is next scheduled to take on No. 10 Vanguard on home courts Tuesday at 2 p.m.
