Late Goal Lifts Loma

Mahlerbe scores with seven minutes in regulation

Box Score

EL CAJON, Calif. – Point Loma Nazarene fought back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat San Diego Christian 2-1 Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference match versus the GSAC-foe. The Sea Lions improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Hawks scored first, in the 34th minute, on a goal from Jordan Abad, but the Green and Gold evened things up in the second half when Jeff Serbin hammered home a penalty kick in the 70th minute of play. Then, with seven minutes to go in regulation, freshman Paul Malherbe scored off a cross from Niko Acosta to give PLNU the 2-1 win.

"I wasn't happy with the way we played in the first half," said PLNU coach Tim Hall. "We came back in the second half and played much better. Last year we might have lost this game; this team has a lot of fight."

San Diego Christian fell to 0-2 on the year with the loss.

Getting the win in goal for the Sea Lions was Carter Phillips who made seven stops, including one that the sophomore just got his finger tips on for the deflection in the 73rd minute. If not for the save the Sea Lions would have been down 2-1.

SDCC was playing down a man after one of their players fouled a Sea Lion in the box, setting up the PK.

PLNU was outshot by the Hawks 16-7 on the day, with SDCC enjoying an eight to five advantage of shots on goal. Fortunately, Point Loma made the best of its chances.

The Sea Lions host Southern Nazarene on Saturday. The match begins at 11:00 a.m.
