Loma Ties with Embry-Riddle

Sea Lions waste two-goal effort from Griffin Fuller

SAN DIEGO – The Sea Lions and visiting Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) played to a 2-2 double-overtime tie Saturday afternoon. Griffin Fuller scored both goals for Point Loma Nazarene but each time Fuller scored the Eagles quickly answered back to even the score.

The deadlock has PLNU at 3-1-1 on the year with Embry-Riddle now at 1-2-2.

Fuller scored the first goal of the non-conference match in the 15th minute of play. Teammate Paul Mahlerbe took a shot that was deflected off the Eagle keeper and to Fuller who headed the ball into the net.

Point Loma's defense broke down in the following seconds which resulted in an easy score for Thiago Xavier once he took the pass from Scott Larson.

The score remained 1-1 two minutes into the second half. Malherbe threw in a rocket that Fuller headed in for his second goal of the contest.

The Eagles, unfortunately for PLNU answered midway into the second, in the 61st minute. Tristan Korras took a cross from Ryan Holt and the score was even at 2-2.

That's the way regulation, and then the first overtime and then the second overtime ended.

The Sea Lions outshot ERAU 22-17 though the Eagles tried eight shots on goal to seven from Point Loma.

PLNU keeper Carter Phillips turned back six shots to preserve the tie.

The Sea Lions next play on Friday September 16 at Marymount College. The match will be played at the Home Depot Center starting at 7:00 pm.
